John Saul
1819–1897 · Horticulturalist who planted Brightwood's orchards and landscaped the National Mall
Born in County Cork, Ireland, John Saul came to Washington in 1841 to help landscape the National Mall, the Ellipse, and Lafayette Square. He planted some 40 acres of apple and peach orchards on the slopes of Brightwood and ran nurseries near the old Brightwood racetrack, building a nationally known seed business.
