Matthew Gault Emery
1818–1901 · Last mayor of the City of Washington; Brightwood landowner
Emery made a fortune as a stonecutter — cutting the cornerstone of the Washington Monument — and kept a hilltop summer estate, Emery Place, in Brightwood, where during the Civil War the property served as a Union signal station and camp. In 1870–71 he was elected the last mayor of the City of Washington before the office was abolished; his estate later became Emery Park.
